Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park Overview
The Serengeti National Park is East Africa’s premier wildlife destination, comprising nearly 15,000 square kilometers of sprawling wilderness. The park is best known as the home to the annual Great Migration of more than two million wildebeest and zebra, which draws visitors from across the globe to witness one of nature’s last truly awe-inspiring spectacles. The Serengeti is also a place where secretive leopards prowl in the shadows of riverine forests and roving lions patrol fiercely contested territories from one horizon to the next. In fact, the high concentration of predator populations is one of the Serengeti’s biggest draws. But how much do you really know about Tanzania’s most famous national park?
Serengeti National Park best time to visit
The ideal time to visit Serengeti remains uncertain due to the park's rich wildlife, which can be observed year-round. However, the migration herds typically roam the Tanzanian Serengeti plains between November and mid-August, before heading towards Kenya's Masai Mara in mid-August and September. This period may offer optimal conditions for experiencing Serengeti National Park. Yet, due to unpredictable climatic changes, it's advisable to consult our safari experts for updated information on herd movements.
Additionally, another Mara River crossing may occur in early November as the herds return from the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The long rainy season, usually from mid-March to April, brings brief showers predominantly at night across East Africa. This time offers reduced prices at lodges and tented camps, lower traffic, and uncrowded park conditions. Alternatively, visiting Southern Serengeti between December and March can provide opportunities to witness the herds congregating at Ndutu plains for calving and nursing.
In April and May, central Serengeti and Seronera areas are often frequented, while June to mid-July is ideal for exploring the Western corridor and Grumeti River area. Northern Serengeti, Bologonja, Lobo areas, and the Mara River region are recommended from mid-July to mid-August, possibly featuring a Mara River crossing. In June and August, the Ikoma area outside the Serengeti National Park can be a suitable destination for game drives.
